What a crazy world we live in, with everything eating each other all the time – is it like this everywhere in the galaxy?

Every Friday my company has a team barbecue, to make sure everyone can spend some time together (since most of the company is high-IQ engineers, they all work a wide variety of hours and the barbecue is one of the ways to get some bonding time in).  Yesterday, we talked at length about one of the group, who just returned from a vacation in Mexico.  He mentioned the dolphins, which led to how dolphins kill sharks, then to how sharks eat seals and that led to a long unintentinoal conversation about what eats what, including fish that will eat birds.  MEanwhile, we are eating barbecued chicken and salmon…  WHat a crazy planet we live in, where most everything is eating everything else all the time.  If there are billions of worlds with intelligent life in our universe, are they all like that?  Or are we mired on a marooned planet where it is kill or be killed?  I don’t personally believe in karma or reincarnation, but if I did there is no way I would consider any life here anything close to a reward (note: I love life and the Earth, but it is not easy living here; even a charmed life is challenging for a person with a conscience, who knows there are so many people in the world who are in challenging circumstances they don’t deerve 🙂 ).
