Last bare-knuckled fight to determine heavyweight world champion was fought in 1889

New York Times tidbit mentioned the bout went 74 rounds, and both men were arrested following the fight. It was the last fight before “gloved boxing” rules.  The winner, John L. Sullivan, went on to become the first gloved-boxing champion.  Searching on Sullivan, it appears he was a reknowned boxer with enormous appetities (booze, women, bravado); he eventually managed his alcoholism to become a prohobitionist, but died young (58) suffering from the effects of his hard life with 10 dollars in his pocket (presumably worth a few hundred dollars today).  There is a biography about him called Strong Boy, highly reviewed on Amazon (4.9 stars on 34 reviews).
