I was always someone who played sports, but my son R plays in the band.
Now he is a senior and his school is playing in the state basketball championships, so he is playing in the band section. I feel just as happy for him — playing for the band at the state championship during his senior year — as if he were playing on the hardwood.
My daughter L shared a funny story: many of the students were hoping for a loss today. A loss meant a day game tomorrow in Round 2, which meant another day out of school. But, alas, the team won today, so it’s a night game (and a school day) tomorrow.
This takes me back to my own high school days, listening to championship games on the radio on our way to baseball practice while yearning to be playing basketball instead of baseball (I played high school baseball and never tried out for the basketball team, although I loved basketball much more than baseball – go figure).
